Spintax - Post variations#193

Publer already has shortcodes, but what would make this incredibly powerful would be allowing spintax, which would allow TRUELY evergreen content generation and automation for scheduled/recycled posts.

If you’re not familiar, spintax works like this:

Let’s say our original article has the sentence:

Writing articles is a lot of fun.
Now if we format the above sentence with spintax, we might have something like:

{Writing|Creating} {articles|stories} is a {lot of fun|rewarding experience}.
Each of the words or phrases contained with {|} are randomly substituted in the spun article. So for the above example, some of the variations generated would be:

Writing stories is a lot of fun.
Creating articles is a rewarding experience.
Creating stories is a rewarding experience.
And so on for all the combinations possible. The number of variations depends on what software or service you use with your spintax.

You can spin articles at the word, phrase, sentence or paragraph level or a combination of all these.

Nested spintax refers to two or more levels of spinning. Not all spinning software or services support nested spinning.

Nested spintax is probably best explained with an example.

Let’s say I have the following sentence in spintax format:

Article directories are {an important {element|component|aspect} of SEO|useful for {getting|gaining} backlinks}.

In the example above, the first level spintax is in blue and the 2nd level is in green. So some examples of the output this example would produce is:

Article directories are an important aspect of SEO.
Article directories are useful for getting backlinks.
Article directories are an important element of SEO.

This would definitely make Publer a SuperPubler. Make sure to give it an upvote. The more votes it gets the sooner we will make it happen :)

I think this is a good idea, not sure it really needs top of the development list though…

Folks, take a look at this tool:

Seems like a good solution you can use for generating post variations. The exported CSV file will already be in the format that Publer accepts.

Hey all, I’m the creator of PostMaker, would love your feedback. I didn’t know about this thread, but it sounds like the same idea!

Any questions or ideas, please shout

Not to sound like “that guy” but I’m not a big fan of this at all. It basically just says the same sentence over and over again with different adjectives and descriptors. That’s ok if you want it to be really basic and not look like you’re repeating yourself however, there are better ways to do evergreen.

Missinglettr does an amazing job of it with the following aspects in place:

  • They’ve developed a way to go through the article and extract a series of snippets. These can be leading/closing sentences of paragraphs or headers.
  • You can exclude certain phrases (i.e., “get your free quote today” or “conclusion”
  • They then list them and allow you to pick the ones that will work for your evergreen campaign. That can be a few or a lot, depending on what you like.
  • You can write your own and add those to the list.
  • They then will apply them to a day’s post(s)
  • They will allow you to post those link as links with meta info, an image with the link in the post content, or post it as a “quote” with a graphic they pull from an internal template. You can mix and match these across social profiles and days to make things appear more natural.

Where I think they fall short is:

  • they will apply that snippet to ALL posts that day (FB, LinkedIn, Twitter) which looks mechanical
  • They don’t have a way to ensure that you don’t use the same snippet more than once or even make sure you don’t use it more than once per channel (i.e., use snippet 9 on day 1 for facebook, day 17 for twitter, and day 28 for LinkedIn
  • If you want good analytics, you have to use their shortener which you cannot configure with your own tags (but has unique tracking IDs on EVERY link that goes out (which is pretty great but allows you no control). Alternatively, you can create your own links and place them all in each post - which is a giant PITA. I generally create one link, tagged the way I like it, for each social profile and use them across each profile (i.e., I use the same FB-tagged link, source=facebook, for all 13 posts in the evergreen campaign)

That’s my 2¢. Evergreen should look as natural and organic as possible. ML does it really well. That’s the gold standard, IMO.

Looking to what Phacient said, it would be great if Publer could do something similar to MissingLettr. The biggest problem with posting social media content as actually creating it, including variation. While Spintax sounds great, it is still a huge amount of work, and not really that diverse once you get down to it. Having some automation to make things seem less mechanical and more varied would be great!

Very valid points from @Phacient and @Guy M - something I would like to solve with Publer. I put together an idea here:
